Domestic Violence

Abusers isolate their victims from their families and friends and destroy their confidence.

If you’ve been the victim of physical or emotional abuse, you need a specialist legal team like ours who are sensitive and understanding to your needs and circumstances.

We’re here to assist you – please don’t be afraid to seek our help.

We are members of the board of trustees for Atal y Fro, showing how seriously we take domestic violence. We seek to help victims in any way we can.

Domestic violence should not be tolerated, and there are laws to protect those who are at risk.

The police have a duty to protect the vulnerable and they have the power to arrest abusers.

What We Will Do For You

You may need to go into emergency housing or a refuge to get to safety. We can help you through the stages in the legal process and help end the threat to you.

We will send a warning letter to prevent any further harassment, pestering, or intimidation from your abuser.

We will also take out an injunction to protect victims of domestic violence in extreme cases. Such orders include:

  • A non-molestation injunction – an order advising the person that they cannot harass, pester, or intimidate you and must not use or threaten violence.
  • An occupation injunction – which can direct a partner to vacate the home or to only live in certain rooms.

A court order will tell the person what they can and cannot do. If they breach the terms of the order, they will be punished by the court.

In certain cases Legal Aid funding will be immediately available enabling us to act quickly to stop the abuse.

Forced Marriage

A forced marriage is one where one person, or both people, is married without their consent or against their will.

Why does it happen? There are many reasons. Parents may force their children into marriage in the belief the honour of the family must be maintained in their community.

They may believe their children benefit by protecting their beliefs and cultural values.

We understand the sensitivities that may be associated in this type of case, whether they be cultural, religious, or otherwise.

What We Will Do For You

Do you feel you are being forced into a marriage? We can help you through the steps you need to take.

A court may be able to make a Forced Marriage Protection Order.

This court order will be unique to the circumstances of the case. Often, it will aim to change the behaviour of the person trying to force you into marriage.

If that person fails to comply with the order, the court has the power to imprison them.

A third person can ask the court to make a Forced Marriage Protection Order on behalf of the victim. This could be a friend, family member, the local authority, or police.
